Rugby World Cup Gold Plated Acme Thunderer Whistle
|The Acme Thunderer story
Joseph Hudson, a farmer working from Derbyshire, moved to the city of Birmingham like so many during the Industrial Revolution, and trained as a toolmaker. His early products were snuff boxes, cork screws and whistles.
His whistle business was very small until in 1883, The London Metropolitan Police advertised for an idea to replace the cumbersome policeman's rattle. Joseph Hudson invented a novel whistle for the purpose. It could be held in the mouth leaving the hands free, a clear advantage over the rattle. The police tested his whistle on Clapham Common, and were delighted when clearly heard just over a mile away.
In 1884, the world's first reliable 'pea' whistle
, 'The Acme Thunderer,' was launched offering total reliability, control and power to the sports referee.Acme, based in the famous Jewelery Quarter of Birmingham, is now the world's largest producer of whistles and the Thunderer is the first choice of professional rugby referees.
